Ears ringing in silence4/7/2023 ![]() Tinnitus can be caused by a number of factors, such as exposure to loud noise, age-related hearing loss, earwax buildup, traumatic brain injury (TBI), inner ear problems, diseases of the heart or blood vessels, and certain neurologic disorders. Not technically a disease, tinnitus is rather a symptom of a problem within the auditory system, which includes the ear, the auditory nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain, and the parts of the brain that process sound, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD).
