Ardbeg scorch4/11/2023 Since then, Ardbeg has developed a huge cult following and a very collectible range through their marrying of older and younger whisky as well as experimenting with different cask maturations. The Young series (Very Young, Still Young and Almost There) led up to the first release of the new Ardbeg 10, or the Renaissance as it was named in 2000. Because of the gaps in production and the remaining stocks, the first age statement release was the (later famous) 17 year old, while they waited for their younger spirits to mature. In its absence, Ardbeg had developed a cult following as a single malt, so the pressure was on to meet expectations. A year later, The Glenmorangie Company saved Ardbeg, adding the peaty profile to the company's portfolio. In 1996, they closed Ardbeg down once more and marked it for demolition. In 1989, Allied Distillers restarted Ardbeg, though only producing for the blended whisky industry as their focus was on their other Islay malt, Laphroaig. This lead to Ardbeg's production of its first unpeated whisky the Kildalton was created in 1979, but was short lived as the distillery was forced to close down in 1981. Toward the end of the 1970s, the whisky bubble finally burst and the demand for peated whisky rapidly declined. Such was this demand that in 1974 Ardbeg started buying in peated malt from Port Ellen to speed up production. Ardbeg gained a much needed boost following the world wars as popularity for peated whisky spiked in the 1960s and 70s. FoundedĪrdbeg, founded by the McDougall family, helped to build a small community on the south coast of the Isle of Islay, with a century of stable growth from the needs of blended whiskies to have a smoky element. It is one of our favourite distilleries, and our Edinburgh shop was the first to be named an Ardbeg Embassy. Most notably white fruit, sea spray, dried red fruit, oily and leathery notes as well as chocolate, tobacco and spices. Ardbeg is known for using heavily peated malt, but the whisky itself has a wonderful and well balanced sweet fruitiness at its core, with a vast array of flavours in the different bottlings.
